Ved et jubileum er det naturlig å se seg tilbake, og slik er det også for meg. Jeg ser tilbake til den måneden jeg var fersk grunnfagsstudent på Institutt for historie ved UiT, som var januar 1975. Instituttet hadde mange flinke laerere, og en av disse var professor Narve Bjørgo. Han underviste på et kurs med fokus på originaldokumenter fra 1400-tallet, blant annet Aslak Bolts jordebok. 53 Bjørgo var en dyktig og inspirerende pedagog. Han la kopi av en original side fra Aslak Bolts jordebok framfor intetanende studenter på et undervisningsrom i Odd Bergs lokaler og sa: «Les!» Så vi gjorde, og jeg vil i dag takke Narve Bjørgo for denne kontante innføring i kildenes verden; den ble for meg en døråpner til et besnaerende kunnskapsrom og til en sterk og overbevist holdning til senere historieforskning. Narve Bjørgos beskjed var: «Historiestudenter, Ad Fontes!» Det første arbeidet jeg gjennomførte basert på originalkilder, var min hovedoppgaveTrollkvinne i nord i historiske kilder og skjønnlitteratur, fullført i 1984. 54 Oppgaven var tverrfaglig, inspirert av den gryende kvinnebevegelsen, en regional studie der kvantitativ og kvalitativ metode utfylte hverandre. Lite visste jeg da om at dette temaet skulle bli mitt forskningsfelt de neste 40 år, føre meg til Edinburgh og en komparativ doktoravhandling der, føre til tekstkritiske kildeutgaver på norsk og på engelsk av rettsreferatene fra trolldomsprosesser i Finnmark, der Solbjørg Ellingsen Fossheim ved Statsarkivet i Tromsø var en viktig samarbeidspartner, 55 føre til publisering av historiske fagbøker og artikler på norsk og på engelsk, 56 føre meg til foredrag i mange land og ikke minst til å bidra til storslagent
