The WITCH 2016 Model - Documentation and Implementation of the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways

Abstract: This paper describes the WITCH -World Induced Technical Change Hybrid -model in its structure, calibration, and the implementation of the SSP/RCP scenario implementation. The WITCH model is a regionally disaggregated hard-linked model based on a a Ramsey type optimal growth model and a detailed bottom-up energy sector model. A particular focus of the model is the modeling or technical change and RnD investments and the analysis of cooperative and non-cooperative climate policies. Moreover, the WITCH 2016 versi… Show more

“…WITCH is a global integrated assessment model with two main distinguishing features: a regional game-theoretic setup, and an endogenous treatment of technological innovation for energy conservation and decarbonization (Emmerling et al, 2016). A top-down inter-temporal Ramsey-type optimal growth model is hard linked with a representation of the energy sector described in a bottom-up fashion, hence the hybrid denomination.…”

“…The WITCH model is designed to assess climate policies. It has been developed and is maintained at Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) and the Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC) (see Emmerling et al 2016).…”

“…WITCH (Bosetti et al, 2006;Emmerling et al, 2016) is a hybrid model that combines an aggregated, top-down inter-temporal optimal growth Ramsey-type model (with perfect foresight) with a detailed description of the energy sector. Energy technologies -divided between the electric and the non-electric sectors -are nested in a Constant Elasticity of Substitution (CES) framework, which represents the many economic and non-economic drivers leading to limited technology substitution in a stylized way.…”
