The Wireless Train Communication Network: Roll2Rail Vision

Abstract: This paper explains the main results obtained from the research carried out in the work package 2 (WP2) of the Roll2Rail (R2R) project. This project aims to develop key technologies and to remove already identified blocking points for radical innovation in the field of railway vehicles, to increase their operational reliability and to reduce life-cycle costs. This project started in May 2015 and has been funded by the Horizon 2020 program of the European Commission. The goal for WP2 is to research on both tech… Show more

“…We set the initial test range M [2,3,4,5,6] to build five basic TCN models. According to equation ( 4), networks with such TCN blocks have the receptive field size of [31,127,511,2047,8095].…”

“…Train communication network is a typical industrial control system in the railway domain, which enables information exchange throughout a train [1]. ere is much more smart equipment, e.g., intelligent sensors and smart control units [2,3], attached to the train communication network, with the rapid development of intelligence in rail vehicles. e traditional train communication network, composed of wire train bus and multifunction vehicle bus, cannot meet the demands of growing bandwidth and interconnection.…”

“…After decades of train-to-ground (T2G) based railway communication, future railway operation and railway applications like virtual coupled trains and fully autonomously driving trains will rely on T2T communications [1]. Since we have stated a lack of channel measurements and models in [2] in 2016, several projects focused on T2T propagation.…”

“…This is needed because trains run very close to each other and the TCN shall have a high availability figure. This research work was done in the European Project Roll2Rail [9] which was focused on the removal of certain bottlenecks for the development of the rolling stock of the future. Given that the idea was to provide a useful characterization of the physical layer to build later an end-to-end communications system, we measured three scenarios: tunnel (typical in subways), open air (foam regional, mainline and high-speed lines) and stations (for all railway lines).…”
