Abstract:A large-scale hydrological model (MIKE HYDRO) was established for the purpose of sustainable agricultural water management in the main stem Tarim River, located in northwest China. In this arid region, agricultural water consumption and allocation management are crucial to address the conflicts among irrigation water users from upstream to downstream. The results of model calibration indicated a close correlation between simulated and observed values. Scenarios with the change on irrigation strategies and land use distributions were investigated. Irrigation scenarios revealed that the available irrigation water has significant and varying effects on the yields of different crops. Irrigation water saving could reach up to 40% in the water-saving irrigation scenario. Land use scenarios illustrated that an increase of farmland area in the lower reach gravely aggravated the water deficit, while a decrease of farmland in the upper reaches resulted in considerable benefits for all sub-catchments. A substitution of crops was also investigated, which demonstrated OPEN ACCESSWater 2015, 7 2822 the potential for saving considerable amounts of irrigation water in upper and middle reaches. Overall, the results of this study provide a scientific basis for decision-making on agricultural water consumption and allocation in the study area.

Irrigation water demand accounts for more than 95% of the total water use in the Kaidu-kongqi River Basin. Determination of the spatial and temporal trends in irrigation water demand is important for making sustainable and wise water management strategies in this highly water deficit region. In this study, the spatial and temporal trends in irrigation water demand as well as net crop irrigation water requirements for nine major crops during 1985-2009 were analyzed by combining the Penman-Monteith equation recommended by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and GIS technology. The regional water stress was also evaluated based on the total irrigation water demand and river discharge at the annual and monthly scales. The results indicated that the annual irrigation water demand in this arid region showed a significant increasing trend during the past 25 years. Total irrigation water demand increased from 14.68 × 10 . The spatial pattern of total irrigation water demand was significantly affected by the changes in cotton growing area. Due to differences in crop planting structure, the monthly average irrigation water demands in Korla City and Yuli County amounted to the peak in July, while those in other regions reached the maximum in June. Although the annual river runoff was much larger than the irrigation water demand, there was serious water deficit during the critical water use period in May and June in some dry years. The presented study OPEN ACCESSSustainability 2015, 7 12959 provides important information for managers and planners on sustainable use of water resources in this arid region.

The benefits of environmental restoration projects are frequently underestimated because decision makers tend to ignore the non-use values of such projects. Using data from a representative contingent valuation survey conducted in Beijing in 2013 and of information gathered during five focus group workshops in Xinjiang, we show that environmental improvements in the Tarim Basin in Northwest China would not only enhance the wellbeing of the local population but also of people living in other parts of the country. In both study sites we find similar preferences for various ecosystem services and the mitigation of environmental problems. Furthermore, respondents from Xinjiang and Beijing were willing to contribute approximately equal shares of their income to a prospective environmental project aimed at the restoration of the Tarim Basin's natural ecosystems. We conclude that government representatives should consider the preferences of people from all parts of China when deciding on future land and water management strategies in Northwest China.
