The war on deciduous forest: Large-scale herbicide treatment in the Swedish boreal forest 1948 to 1984

Abstract: At the mid-twentieth century the pace of the transformation of the Swedish forest increased. New methods; large-scale clearcutting, mechanization of logging and planting of seedlings were developed. Chemicals were used to control insects and unwanted tree species. The aims of this study were to elucidate the timing, chain of events and the spatial extent of the large-scale spraying of phenoxy acids in Swedish forests and the drivers for this practice. More than 700 000 hectares of productive forest land was sp… Show more

“…While chemical agents are commonly used in commercial forestry globally, their use in European forests appears to be limited (McCarthy et al, 2011). Pesticides and herbicides have been applied in Europe in afforestation, during soil preparation for seed sowing and in young forest stands as a means to control competing vegetation and insects (Karmiłowicz, 2019;Östlund et al, 2022). Nowadays, application of chemical agents is not common in European forests.…”

“…At least 700 000 hectares of productive forestland were sprayed with herbicides in Sweden between 1948 and 1984 (Östlund et al, 2022). Large-scale use of herbicides was banned in the late 1980s because of the widespread protests from a growing environmental movement, which argued that the use of toxins damaged flora, fauna and people who worked with the herbicides (Östlund et al, 2022;Lisberg Jensen, 2006;Lindewall, 1992).…”
