The Voyage Home: New Mexico Libraries Migrate to WMS, OCLC's Cloud-Based ILS

Abstract: Cloud-computing is causing a major shift in the way organizations manage their data. For libraries this shift entails the switch from stand-alone ILSs to cloud-based systems. The new generation of ILSs embraces this model. The University of New Mexico Libraries undertook the migration to OCLC's cloud-based ILS, WorldShare Management Services (WMS). The process required choosing the vendor, preparing the data for migration, and implementing workflows. Through this article the authors will look at each of these … Show more

“…Many studies describe a step-by-step account of reasons for migration, benefits and challenges encountered during the migration for a library as a single university library or a member of a large consortium. 9 Fu and Carmen offer a case study of Central Washington's University's migration to Alma and Primo which highlights their migration as a time-consuming process. 10 The migration work needed cross-departmental teamwork to successfully complete all migration-related events; their study emphasizes the importance of systems and e-resources librarians in fixing and reporting outstanding issues.…”

“…12 Bordeianu and Kohl mentioned this as well and stated "in this new system any problem becomes a shared problemif the system goes down, every single WMS library goes down." 13 Another issue of concern is the time required to migrate. Holbert's assessment of the absurdity of trying to migrate to a new ILS in four months is echoed by Zhu and Spidal, who discussed the decision to migrate the thirty-seven members of the Orbis Cascade Alliance in four cohorts, allowing four to six months per group.…”

“…They do note, however, that they are still "ironing out some wrinkles" with the PubGet service (p. 132). Bordeianu and Kohl (2015) also describe their library's migration to WMS in detail and note that OCLC provided an automated matching process for migration of electronic resource records. They also describe, however, the order functionality in WMS to be "clumsier and less user-friendly" (p. 287) than their previous Innovative system.…”
