The vortices of superfluid 3He

Abstract: In the supetfluid phases of 3He quantized vortex lines have been investigated under uniform rotation, when they form a regular array of rectilinear objects. A large diversity exists in the structure and properties of vortices, owing to the complicated nature of symmetry breaking in the different superfluid phases. A review is presented here on the various experimentally verified types of vortices. Recent measurements open a puzzling problem about their interaction and interconnection at the first-order phase b… Show more

“…For the comparative measurement, the rotation rates required are lower by about two orders of magnitude. At the very low temperatures of order 10 −3 K needed for superfluid 3 He, rotation rates of the cryostat of order Ω ∼ 10 sec −1 already have been realized [15]. In relation to superfluid 3 He, it is also worthwhile to mention here that for thin 3 He-A films, an electrically neutral system, a half integer quantum Hall effect, owing to a topological invariant of the p-wave order parameter in this system, has been suggested [16].…”

“…Superfluid 3 He is a typical anisotropic Fermionic superfluid consisting of spin-triplet p-wave Cooper pairs. 1 The order parameter of superfluid 3 He is characterized by 3×3 complex fields, which allows an existence of a rich variety of topological excitations. An example of topological excitations is a quantized vortex.…”

“…An example of topological excitations is a quantized vortex. Quantized vortices in superfluid 3 He involve extremely rich physical phenomena and this topic has been studied for decades. 2,3 Quantized vortices in superfluid 3 He are classified by the symmetry property.…”
