THE VLT LEGA-C SPECTROSCOPIC SURVEY: THE PHYSICS OF GALAXIES AT A LOOKBACK TIME OF 7 Gyr

Abstract: The Large Early Galaxy Census (LEGA-C a ) is a Public Spectroscopic Survey of ∼ 3200 K-band selected galaxies at redshifts z = 0.6 − 1.0 with stellar masses M * > 10 10 M , conducted with VIMOS on ESO's Very Large Telescope. The survey is embedded in the COSMOS field (R.A. = 10h00; Dec. = +2 deg). The 20-hour long integrations produce high-S/N continuum spectra that reveal ages, metallicities and velocity dispersions of the stellar populations. LEGA-C's unique combination of sample size and depth will enable u… Show more

“…Each galaxy is observed for ∼ 20 h, which results in spectra with S/N ∼ 20Å −1 (with resolution R ∼ 3000) in the wavelength range ∼ 0.6µm − 0.9µm. For details of the data reduction procedure, see van der Wel et al (2016) and Straatman et al (2018). This work is based on the second data release 1 , which contains 1550 primary sample galaxies.…”

“…The combination of photometric and spectroscopic data enables evolutionary studies of relations among the spectroscopic and structural properties of galaxies. The largest extragalactic field surveyed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the ∼ 2deg 2 COSMOS field, has thus been the preferred target for a suite of intermediate-and high-redshift spectroscopic campaigns (e.g, zCOSMOS, Lilly et al 2007Lilly et al , 2009PRIMUS, Coil et al 2011;VUDS, Le Fèvre et al 2015;FMOS-COSMOS, Silverman et al 2015;LEGA-C;van der Wel et al 2016). At 0.1 < z < 0.6, broad spectroscopic wavelength coverage and a high level of completeness are critically important for accurately tracing the relations between photometric and spectroscopic properties of galaxies.…”

“…The LEGA-C survey (van der Wel et al 2016) is an ESO public spectroscopic survey with VLT/VIMOS (LeFevre et al 2003) with the aim of obtaining high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N ∼ 20 Å −1 ) continuum spectra of 0.6 < z < 1 galaxies. The full LEGA-C sample will consist of more than 3000 galaxies, K-band selected from the Muzzin et al (2013) UltraVISTA survey in the 1.62 square degree region within the COSMOS field (Scoville et al 2007).…”

“…Stellar masses are derived by using an initial mass function (Chabrier 2003), dust extinction (Calzetti et al 2000), and stellar population libraries and exponentially declining SFR (Bruzual & Charlot 2003). For further details on the data reduction steps and the method used to derive the physical parameters, see van der Wel et al (2016).…”
