The Virga-Sniffer – a new tool to identify precipitation evaporation using ground-based remote-sensing observations

Abstract: Abstract. Continuous long-term ground-based remote-sensing observations combined with vertically pointing cloud radar and ceilometer measurements are well suited for identifying precipitation evaporation fall streaks (so-called virga). Here we introduce the functionality and workflow of a new open-source tool, the Virga-Sniffer, which was developed within the framework of RV Meteor observations during the ElUcidating the RolE of Cloud–Circulation Coupling in ClimAte (EUREC4A) field experiment in January–Februa… Show more

“…To ensure that the Virga-Sniffer for the BCO is configured optimally, we establish a statistical comparison of the results of the Virga-Sniffer at the BCO, with the results of Kalesse-Los et al ( 2023) during the EUREC 4 A campaign. Please again note the following differences between the study by Kalesse-Los et al (2023) and this present study:…”

“…The Virga-Sniffer is a Python package tool developed by Kalesse-Los et al (2023) This ensures that tilted fall streaks and vertically separated cloud layers are captured. Radar-based surface rain flag is set if Z e is larger than 0 dBZ in the first radar rage gate.…”

“…During EUREC 4 A, BCOHAT measurements were complemented by HATPRO measurements aboard the Meteor performed by the Leipzig Institute for Meteorology (LIM), here referred to as LIMHAT. Aboard the Meteor, a 94 GHz cloud radar (Küchler et al, 2017) was installed, equipped with a passive radiometer channel measuring T B at 89 GHz (Kalesse-Los et al, 2023), here referred to as LIMRAD. A similar instrument was stationed aboard the Merian (Acquistapace et al, 2022), here referred to as MSMRAD.…”

“…LIMRAD was operated with two different chirp programs specified inKalesse-Los et al (2023). Between January 17 and 29, 2020, and Jan 31 and February 28, 2020, the temporal resolution of LIMRAD was 2.9 s and 1.6 s, respectively.…”
