The view update problem for XML

Abstract: International audienceWe study the problem of update propagation across views in the setting where both the view and the source database are XML documents. We consider a simple class of XML views that remove selected parts of the source document. The considered update operations permit to insert and delete subtrees of the document. We focus on constructing propagations that are 1) schema compliant i.e., when applied to the source document they give a document that satisfies the document schema; 2) side-effect … Show more

“…These theoretical results are our first results (together with [35]) on a more ambitious research objective which is to provide a complete framework for view update translation on XML documents. This should include, among others, a user-friendly specification of update functions, algorithms for translating updates, an interface for a system administrator that allows to specify preferences when several translations of the same user update are possible.…”

“…We have proposed a method for computing an optimal propagation of a single view update, where the optimality criterion is restraining side effects on the hidden part of the source. An important difference with the current work is that in [35], views are materialized.…”

“…A materialized view is intended to avoid generating the same result from scratch every time it is to be utilized. The need for handling materialized views has received considerable attention from the database community, e.g., [2,[4][5][6]11,26,32,40,43]. However, there are several properties that must be considered in maintaining views.…”
