The Versatility of the Turbodrill in North Sea Drilling

Abstract: The use of straight hole turbodrills in the North Sea, in vertical and deviated well applications, is discussed with reference to the optimisation of drilling performance and to the techniques employed for directional control. The adaptation of turbo drilling to maximize the benefits of STRATAPAX* bits is examined, with specific reference to well examples in the Northern North Sea. Improvements in drilling performance due to the development of the turbodrill/STRATAPAX* bit combination are analysed. … Show more

“…The greater the gauge length, the more the turbodrill will turn left. 3,4 Converting a nonsteerable to a steerable turbodrill involves changing a bearing section. The basic difference between "conventional" and "steerable" is that conventional bearing sections have stabilizers concentric with the body, while steerable bearing sections are fitted with an eccentric or "offset" stabilizer ( There has been no need to provide different offsets for different rates of tum.…”

“…Paterson and Shute discuss the left-hand walk rate of PDC bit/turbine combinations in relation to bit gauge length and near-bit stabilizer length. 2 Directional characteristics are also discussed by Powell et al 3 More extensive studies are required to determine accurately the directional characteristics of PDC bits and the effect of stabilizer size and placement.…”

“…6 Some formations, however, seem to resist the cutting action of this bit; hard sandstones are among these. Probably the most dramatic development in bit technology is the Stratapax TM.…”
