The vehicle approach for freight road transport energy and environmental analysis in Spain

Abstract: Purpose and methodology This paper summarizes the results of a permanent road freight sample survey carried out in 1997-2003 on heavy duty vehicles in Spain. In particular, this work reviews some of the key indicators that are measuring the efficiency and the operational performance of the freight road transport. The indicators of transport are coming directly and indirectly from the survey. The survey is based on a stratified random sampling, and represents an audit of the performance of 41,600 vehicles in a … Show more

“…Considering the first sub-topic area, the work of Pérez-Martínez (2009) [86] explored some energy efficiency indicators in the Spanish road freight transport. The research highlighted a low-level reduction of emissions intensity per kilometer (0.2%) and an increasing in the fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions (9.8%).…”

“…The growth of the Spanish economy, especially during the period 1995-2007, and associated growth of personal incomes, has generated increasing need for transportation (both passengers and freight). This economical growth has induced the increase in the ownership of private cars and the performance of transport services operating and relaying predominantly on diesel vehicles (Pérez-Martínez 2009). The diesel cars have become the most popular mode of private transport in Spain in detriment of the gasoline cars, due to lower operation costs (lower fuel prices and fuel consumption of diesel).…”
