The Vasodilating Effect and Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibition Activity of Three Dietary Flavonols: Comparsion between Myricetin, Quercetin and Morin, in vitro

Abstract: The aim of this study is to compare the vasodiating effects and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition activity of three dietary flavonols, myricetin, quercetin and morin, in vitro. The three flavonols ranging from 0 to 200 μM show no cytotoxicity to small vessel endothelial cells (SVEC). For vasodilative assay, of the three flavonols, myricetin showed the greatest induction in the levels of nitric oxide (NO) and prostacyclin (PGI 2), and the expression of cyclooxygenase (COX-2). Myricetin, quercetin and mor… Show more

“…The renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS) hormonal cascade is one of the most significant pathways to preserve hemodynamic stability, with ACE as the key enzyme in this mechanism to control hypertension. Quercetin, kaempferol, and apigenin acted as ACE inhibitors with IC 50 values of 43, 178, and 196 mM, respectively [ 53 ], while myricetin inhibited ACE at a similar rate to quercetin [ 54 ]. However, the IC 50 value of caffeic acid was 430 µM [ 55 ], while gallic acid and p -coumaric acid exhibited 34.3% and 16.8% inhibitions, respectively, using a concentration of 4 mg/mL [ 56 ].…”

“…Angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is the major cell receptor of SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2. It plays a key role in the entrance of the virus into the cell to produce the final infection 26 ; interestingly morin has angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition activity also 27 .…”

“…Moringa leaves can contain a high concentration of quercetin, reaching up to 384.61 mg per 100 g. The antioxidant activity of quercetin stems from its highly reactive phenolic component, which stabilizes free radicals through hydrogenation reactions and complex formation (Zamora & Hidalgo, 2016). Antihypertensive effect of quercetin may be mediated by ACE enzyme inhibition (Chen et al, 2019; Kalehoff & Oparil, 2020) and or increasing NO production (Aremu et al, 2019; Bilanda et al, 2017). Additionally, quercetin decreased vascular tone induced by prostaglandin F thus reducing vascular contractility and decreasing BP (Takır et al, 2015).…”
