The Variation of Neutrophil Alkaline Phosphatase During the Menstrual Cycle

Abstract: The variation of neutrophil alkaline phosphatase (N.A.P.) activity during the menstrual cycle was investigated in 9 normal females, 7 females taking various oral contraceptives, and an infertile female receiving gonadotrophin therapy. The day to day variation of N.A.P. values in 2 males and the range of values in 272 normal adults and 72 pregnant women were also determined. Adult females have a significantly higher N.A.P. value than males. Normal females show two physiological peaks of N.A.P. activity during t… Show more

“…However, examining the data presented in the literature, a mild non-significant increase of leukocyte around ovulation was observed in many studies [21,22]. Moreover, the leukocyte activity for alkaline phosphatase showed a significant increase at the ovulatory period even in the studies around 1970 [24,25]. Furthermore, women undergoing ovulation induction by gonadotropin revealed leukocytosis [26,27] and the increased polymorphonuclear leukocytes in peripheral blood at the ovulatory period were in an activated state [28].…”
