Hepatic steatosis may be caused by type 2 diabetes or obesity and is one of the origins of chronic liver disease. A non-invasive technique based on microwave propagation can be a good solution to monitor hepatic tissue pathologies. The present work is devoted to the dielectric permittivity measurements in healthy and fatty liver in the microwave range. A mouse model following normal and high sugar/glucose (HFS) diets was used. We demonstrated the change in the triglyceride and glucose concentration in the hepatic tissue of HFS diet mice. The difference in the dielectric permittivity of healthy and fatty liver was observed in the range from 100 MHz to 2 GHz. The dielectric permittivity was found to be 42 in the healthy tissue and 31 in the fatty liver tissue at 1 GHz. The obtained results demonstrate that dielectric permittivity can be a sensitive tool to distinguish between healthy and fatty hepatic tissue.

This paper presents the synthesis of a mixture solution that is equivalent to ex-vivo liver tissue dielectric characteristics between 500 MHz and 5 GHz. The mimicking solution was synthesized using concentrations of two chemicals, the solute which is referred to as the inclusion phase and the solvent, referred to as the host phase. The inclusion phase consisted of bovine serum albumin (BSA) powder and the host phase was comprised of a phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution with a concentration of Triton X-100 (TX-100). The dielectric properties of these two phases were substituted into Bruggeman’s two-phase mixture equation to estimate the dielectric properties of an excised liver tissue. Furthermore, the study exploits Bruggeman’s equation to investigate the impact of tissue dehydration levels on the dielectric properties of an excised tissue. The effect of dehydration has been characterised as a function of time based on the loss-on-drying technique (a substance is heated until it is completely dry). Dielectric parameters were measured as a function of frequency using a slim form open-ended coaxial probe at a constant room temperature of circa 25◦ C. Measured dielectic data were fitted to the Cole-Cole model and good agreement with the mimicking solutions was obtained. These results indicate that these solutions can be used to model the human body phantoms for microwave medical applications.

Adrenal gland-induced hypertension, also known as secondary hypertension, is a medical condition caused by an underlying adrenal pathology, most typically adrenocortical adenomas. Current clinical practices involve pharmacotherapy or surgical resection to treat adrenal gland diseases that cause hypertension. However, due to the limitations of these treatment options, microwave ablation (MWA) has emerged as a promising minimally invasive alternative. An accurate understanding of the dielectric properties of adrenal glands would support the further development and optimization of MWA technology for treating adrenal tumors. Only a few studies have examined the dielectric properties of both human and animal adrenal glands, and the sample sizes of these studies have been relatively small. Therefore, further dielectric data of human and animal adrenal glands are warranted. This paper presents the ex vivo dielectric properties of the ovine adrenal glands (medulla and cortex) and summarizes the published literature on dielectric data of adrenal glands from porcine, bovine, ovine, and human samples in the microwave frequency range to analyze the consistency and reliability of the reported data. The dielectric properties of the ovine adrenal glands (N = 8) were measured using an open-ended coaxial probe measurement technique at frequencies ranging from 0.5 to 8.5 GHz. This study also investigated the temperature-dependent dielectric properties of the ovine adrenal medulla ranging from 37 to 64°C at frequencies ranging from 0.5 to 8.5 GHz. The dielectric properties of the ovine adrenal medulla measured in this study were found to be consistent with the literature. Moreover, the review suggests that variations exist in the dielectric properties of the adrenal medulla and cortex among species. The study also found that the dielectric properties of the adrenal medulla decrease with increasing temperature, similar to other tissues for which temperature-dependent dielectric data have been reported. This summary of dielectric data of adrenal glands and the temperature-dependent dielectric properties of the ovine adrenal medulla will accelerate the development of MWA technologies for hypertension treatment.
