The economy of distribution networks largely depends on the utilization rate of distribution network equipment. Most of the emerging intelligent power consumption technologies have a positive effect on equipment utilization and their use can save investment of distribution networks. In this paper, the influence of intelligent power consumption technologies on the utilization rate of distribution network equipment is reviewed. The evaluation methods and indexes are assessed first and then intelligent power consumption equipment with energy storage function, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology and time-of-use (TOU) tariff are reviewed respectively. It is concluded that these intelligent power consumption technologies and measures have great potential to improve utilization rate of distribution network equipment because of their effective improvement to power load. Meanwhile, recommendations on how to utilize these intelligent power consumption technologies to improve utilization rate of distribution network equipment are proposed.

Abstract:To address the static voltage stability issue and suppress the voltage fluctuation caused by the increasing integration of wind farms and solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants, a two-tier reactive power and voltage control strategy based on ARMA power forecasting models for wind and solar plants is proposed in this paper. Firstly, ARMA models are established to forecast the output of wind farms and solar PV plants. Secondly, the discrete equipment is pre-regulated based on the single-step prediction information from ARMA forecasting models according to the optimization result. Thirdly, a multi-objective optimization model is presented and solved by particle swarm optimization (PSO) according to the measured data and the proposed static voltage stability index. Finally, the IEEE14 bus system including a wind farm and solar PV plant is utilized to test the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. The results show that the proposed strategy can suppress voltage fluctuation and improve the static voltage stability under the condition of high penetration of renewables including wind and solar power.

A Decentralized Local Flexibility Market Considering the Uncertainty of Demand

Abstract:The role of the distribution system operator (DSO) is evolving with the increasing possibilities of demand management and flexibility. Rather than implementing conventional approaches to mitigate network congestions, such as upgrading existing assets, demand flexibility services have been gaining much attention lately as a solution to defer the need for network reinforcements. In this paper, a framework for a decentralized local market that enables flexibility services trading at the distribution level is introduced. This market operates on two timeframes, day-ahead and real-time and it allows the DSO to procure flexibility services which can help in its congestion management process. The contribution of this work lies in considering the uncertainty of demand during the day-ahead period. As a result, we introduce a probabilistic process that supports the DSO in assessing the true need of obtaining flexibility services based on the probability of congestion occurrence in the following day of operation. Besides being able to procure firm flexibility for high probable congestions, a new option is introduced, called the right-to-use option, which enables the DSO to reserve a specific amount of flexibility, to be called upon later if necessary, for congestions that have medium probabilities of taking place. In addition, a real-time market for flexibility trading is presented, which allows the DSO to procure flexibility services for unforeseen congestions with short notice. Also, the effect of the penetration level of flexibility on the DSO's total cost is discussed and assessed. Finally, a case study is carried out for a real distribution network feeder in Spain to illustrate the impact of the proposed flexibility framework on the DSO's congestion management process.
