The Value of the Intravenous Pyelogram and Micturating Cystourethrogram in the Newborn

Abstract

SUMMARY This study has shown our experience with radiological investigation of the renal tract by IVP and MCU in infants presenting in an obstetric hospital. During the 4 years of this study, 160 infants from a consecutive series of 19,377 live births were referred, representing 1% of the population. The commonest indication was urinary tract infection (80%) and significant abnormalities influencing patient management were found in 46% of such infants. A marked male predominance was noted (82%). The procedures were simple to perform with no serious complications. To both radiologists and clinicians, therefore, we would strongly urge that, on appropriate indications, these investigations should be performed in newborn infants, and presentation of the experience of others in this field should be encouraged.
