The Value of Serum Complement C1q in the Diagnosis of Acute Ischemic Stroke

Abstract: Serum complement C1q is an independent risk factor for acute outbreak of ischemic stroke, whose level is closely related to the outbreak and infarct size and neurological function impairment.

“…Although C1q has no correlation with inflammatory cells in serum, tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes were correlated with C1q. The level of C1q in serum is elevated in patients with atherosclerosis and acute ischemic stroke, and a similar observation has been documented for glimoas and sepsis [20,21,22,23] . Although it was observed reduced in patients with multiple myeloma [24] .…”

“… 8 In two previous studies of patients with ischemic stroke, serum C1q levels of patients were substantially elevated as compared to healthy controls or controls without stroke. 10 , 11 Our study also displayed that serum C1q levels were statistically significantly enhanced in patients with TBI than in healthy controls. Moreover, C1q expressions were significantly increased in rat brain microglia following the ischemic insult.…”

“… 8 , 9 In patients with acute ischemic stroke, serum C1q levels were significantly increased. 10 A recent clinical investigation showed that serum C1q levels were positively associated with severity of neurological impairment and infarct size of patients with acute ischemic stroke. 11 However, to the best of our knowledge, there is a paucity of data available regarding the relationship between serum C1q levels and the severity plus prognosis of TBI.…”

“…The link with complex diseases is the apolipoprotein E gene allele 4 (APOE є4) inheritance [6][7][8]. The consequence of the APOE є4 inheritance is defective complement activity [9,10] because this isoform resists the innate immune cascade checkpoint control at C1q which is a subcomponent of the complement C1 complex [8]. Sustained complement activation is a potent driver of inflammation in the body including the brain [11][12][13][14][15].…”
