The Value of Oxygenation Saturation Index in Predicting the Outcomes of Patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the association between oxygenation saturation index (OSI) and the outcome of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients, and assess the predictive performance of OSI for ARDS patients’ mortality. This study was conducted at one regional hospital with 66 adult intensive care unit (ICU) beds. All patients with ARDS were identified between November 1 2016 and May 31 2018, and their clinical information was retrospectively collected. The lowest PaO2/FiO2 ratio and SpO2/FiO2… Show more

“…SpO 2 <90% has been used as a marker for the use of glucocorticoids during the outbreak, 37 and the oxygenation saturation index is associated with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) severity and increased mortality. 38,39 Sex seems to have no effect on severe COVID-19. Although early reports from Wuhan indicated more men than women had severe COVID-19, 9,11,26 following studies reported similar proportions of men and women admitted to ICUs, suggesting sex differences disappeared with higher incidence.…”

“…Integration of SpO 2 and FiO 2 gives insight into the respiratory status of the patient as it accounts for the supplied oxygen level. The SpO 2 /FiO 2 ratio was found to be a reliable marker for acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome in adults and children [15][16][17]. The SpO 2 /FiO 2 ratio in preterm infants is inversely correlated with the gestational age at 36 weeks' PMA, and is lower in infants with worse respiratory disease patterns [18].…”

“…Vital signs showed severe or critically ill patients had higher body temperature and respiratory rate, and lower SpO 2 on admission. SpO 2 < 90% has been used as a marker for the use of glucocorticoids during the outbreak [ 36 ], and the oxygenation saturation index is associated with ARDS severity and increased mortality [ 37 , 38 ].…”
