The value of national arthroplasty registry data in 2023

Abstract: The importance of registries has been brought into focus by recent UK national reports focusing on implant (Cumberlege) and surgeon (Paterson) performance. National arthroplasty registries provide real-time, real-world information about implant, hospital, and surgeon performance and allow case identification in the event of product recall or adverse surgical outcomes. They are a valuable resource for research and service improvement given the volume of data recorded and the longitunidal nature of data collecti… Show more

“…Most registries do not record which surgeon actually completed the procedure or their level of experience and training and the degree of supervision for residents/registrars/fellows when they were performing some or all of the procedure. The surgeon may be more important than the prosthesis in defining the risk of revision surgery 20,22,33,34 . Similarly, improved recording of length of stay (for example day case procedure) and patient factors, such as certain medical comorbidities, are particularly important in modern surgery where it can be restricted for patients because of BMI, glycemic control, and other factors 35 .…”

“…Factors beyond the prosthesis influence the outcome of surgery profoundly, perhaps to a greater extent than the prosthesis itself 19,20 . Known (and unknown) variables of patients, surgeons, and surgical technique influence whether, or when, an arthroplasty will require revision surgery.…”

“…Baker et al 7 also update us on the current value of national arthroplasty registry data. These data have moved on significantly in their validity and utility during the last decade, partly through challenges from the editorial community.…”
