“…However, this study did not assess the other echocardiographic methods of LV functional assessment. [8] In our study, we found a higher correlation between 2-dimensional FS and CMR LVEF than that of M-mode FS.…”

“…[6] Recent evaluations in patients with DMD have demonstrated moderate reproducibility of echocardiographic measures of LV function and a correlation coefficient of only 0.67 between fractional shortening (FS) by echocardiography and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR). [7, 8] Echocardiography and CMR have been compared in other disease processes and, in patients with myocardial infarction, echocardiography underestimates LV volumes and LVEF and is less sensitive in the detection of focal wall motion abnormalities. [9] CMR provides superior delineation of the border between the blood pool and endocardium and image quality is not affected by external factors such as body habitus.…”

“…144,[149][150][151][152] An important limitation in the application of standard transthoracic echocardiography in the care of patients with DMD and BMD is the diminishment of imaging (acoustic) windows because of progression of scoliosis or obesity with advancing age. 153 Thus, the use of other imaging modalities, such as cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), might better fully characterize the severity of cardiac involvement in older patients. 153 The role of CMR in the assessment of patients with DMD and BMD is evolving.…”

CMR is capable of providing objective 3-dimensional anatomic analysis, including assessment of ventricular volumes, EFs, and hypokinesia.…”

“…This is not the case in human trials, where minimally invasive monitoring methods are necessary. Currently such noninvasive methods include the evaluation of patients’ muscles’ physical capacity1415, MRI based functional assessments of cardiac and skeletal muscles161718, and quantification of circulating biomarkers. The most commonly used circulating biomarker for MD is serum muscle creatine kinase (mCK), which leaks into the blood stream upon muscle damage.…”
