The value, challenges and practical considerations of conducting qualitative research on antimicrobial stewardship in primary care

Abstract: In order to design appropriate antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programmes, it is crucial to understand challenges to tackling antibiotic resistance (AMR) specific to each healthcare setting. Antibiotic prescribing in primary care accounts for most prescriptions with a significant proportion considered clinically inappropriate. Qualitative research has a long history in social sciences, but its value and contribution are still contested in medical journals including in the AMR/AMS field. However, through its fo… Show more

“…We need all question types. Two recent papers by Borek et al [25] and Wanat et al [24] highlighted the opportunities given by behavioral sciences (health psychology) and their qualitative methods to mitigate antibiotic resistance (hence, joining efforts to knowledge derived from quantitative methods). Some studies use both quantitative and qualitative methods.…”

“… 13 , 14 For AMS guidance to be usable and useful and have sustainable uptake, it is imperative to prioritize the understanding and optimization of the user experience as a foundational component. 15 Insights and evidence rooted in understanding of real-life experience are also crucial when developing and implementing AMS activities, such as different forms of guidance, in a context-specific manner. 16–19 …”
