The validity of astrological predictions on marriage and divorce: a longitudinal analysis of Swedish register data

Abstract: This paper examines astrology, a concept that is considered unscientific by broad segments of the population in the western world. Despite this, astrology remains for some an important source for advice regarding choices in a range of different matters, including career and relationships. The continuing popularity of astrology may at least partly be linked to an insufficient body of empirical research that has been able to test hypotheses formulated by astrological theory, both due to a lack of data beyond ver… Show more

“…Yet, this critical assumption has been ignored by hundreds of single-factor experiments, including a disproportionate number of Sun-sign-only studies (e.g., Dean et. al., 2016;Helgertz & Scott, 2020), and Moon-phase only studies (Marko, 2017), many of which have been done with unrealistic expectations and have led to disappointing results (Houran & Bauer, 2022). The evaluation of emergent effects would seem to entail an additional approach-a multifactor testing or some variation of multiple regression, and these are methods that the research program also explores.…”

“…Although scientific tests aimed at verifying the postulates of natal astrology have repeatedly failed [2][3][4][5][6], horoscopes, an astrologer's interpretation of natal charts, are still extremely popular. This holds even after the strongest evidence against natal astrology to date was provided in a double-blind study by Carlson in 1985 [7].…”
