THE VALIDITY OF ADULT ARRESTEE SELF-REPORTS OF CRACK COCAINE USE*

Abstract: Despite the many problems associated with crack use, little validated empirical evidence about the prevalence of crack cocaine exists. Researchers that track crack cocaine use have relied on self-reports to differentiate crack and powder cocaine. Prior research suggests that the accuracy of self-reports for the use of a variety of illicit substances is relatively low. To examine the validity of self-reports of crack use, this article employs a newly developed technology to detect specifically the presence of m… Show more

“…Local identification at a point (X, Z, W ) is clearly problematic, since there are only five equality conditions to determine the eight unknowns P 00 , P 01 , P 11 , Ω 00 , Ω 01 , Ω 10 , Ω 11 , ω 1 . In general, this means that only interval rather than point identification is available.…”

“…This worry about data quality persists in spite of the use of computer-assisted audio interviewing methods (A-CASI), designed to ensure confidentiality of the interview process (Lessler and O'Reilly,1997). In some special cases, external bio-assay checks have suggested high rates of underreporting (Magura and Kang, 1997;Lu et. al., 2001) but these studies are based on highly selected samples gathered in difficult circumstances such as police custody.…”
