“…Perceived discrimination at work was measured by the question, “Over the past year, have you ever experienced workplace discrimination?” If subjects answered “yes,” they were asked to select the perceived reason(s) for discrimination from a list of six possible answers: (a) gender; (b) birth region; (c) age; (d) education; (e) office or field work; or (f) job division (eg, firefighting, EMS, or rescue). The same question was used in the Korean Working Conditions Survey (KWCS) which benchmarked the European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS) to measure workplace discrimination and the statistics quality of the KWCS was assured by previous studies, though we modified the examples to reflect characteristics of the working conditions of firefighters. For example, we excluded “employment” as a reason for discrimination which was presented in the KWCS because all firefighters are public officials in Korea.…”
