The vacuum platform

Abstract: Abstract. This paper describes GridPP's Vacuum Platform for managing virtual machines (VMs), which has been used to run production workloads for WLCG and other HEP experiments. The platform provides a uniform interface between VMs and the sites they run at, whether the site is organised as an Infrastructure-as-a-Service cloud system such as OpenStack, or an Infrastructure-as-a-Client system such as Vac. The paper describes our experience in using this platform, in developing and operating VM lifecycle managers… Show more

“…IaaC (Infrastructure as a Client) models must also be supported. This is realised in Dirac by a generic pilot model [262], where a plugin mechanism enables easy adaptation on a wide range of computing resources [263][264][265], including cloud resources, high performance computing (HPC) centres and the servers of the LHCb online farm.…”

“…The format of the VacQuery messages has previously been specified in an HEP Software Foundation Technical Note [6] and discussed in a previous CHEP paper [7]. The messages are JSON documents sent in UDP packets to the vacmond server listening on port 8884.…”

“…In a previous CHEP paper [5] and HSF technical note [6] we presented the Vacuum Platform specification, which Vac, and its cloud-based sibling Vcycle [7], follow. This platform defines the interfaces between virtual machines and the Vac or Vcycle systems which manage them.…”
