The UV-B Photoreceptor UVR8: From Structure to Physiology

Abstract: Low doses of UV-B light (280 to 315 nm) elicit photomorphogenic responses in plants that modify biochemical composition, photosynthetic competence, morphogenesis, and defense. UV RESISTANCE LOCUS8 (UVR8) mediates photomorphogenic responses to UV-B by regulating transcription of a set of target genes. UVR8 differs from other known photoreceptors in that it uses specific Trp amino acids instead of a prosthetic chromophore for light absorption during UV-B photoreception. Absorption of UV-B dissociates the UVR8 di… Show more

“…g085050 (herein referred to as Cr-COP1; previously also described as PUTATIVE LIGHT RESPONSE SIGNALING PROTEIN1 [LRS1]; Schierenbeck et al, 2015). The identification of Cr-COP1 further suggests the presence of a conserved UV-B signaling pathway similar to the known pathway in Arabidopsis (Heijde and Ulm, 2012;Li et al, 2013;Tilbrook et al, 2013;Jenkins, 2014). Cr-UVR8 and Cr-COP1 cDNAs were cloned and verified to match their respective sequence annotations.…”

“…UV-B activation of UVR8 initiates a molecular signaling cascade leading to UV-B acclimation and the ability to tolerate constant UV-B exposure (Kliebenstein et al, 2002;Li et al, 2013;Tilbrook et al, 2013;Jenkins, 2014). Briefly, the UVR8 homodimer monomerizes upon UV-B exposure and interacts with CONSTITUTIVELY PHOTOMORPHOGENIC1 (COP1) (Oravecz et al, 2006;Favory et al, 2009;Rizzini et al, 2011).…”

“…The UV-B radiation has several detrimental effects but it also serves as a key regulator of plant morphology and physiological, biochemical and genetic mechanisms [127,129,133,134]. Plants actively respond to irradiation with high or low UV-B doses, either by the activation of repair mechanisms or by stimulation of photomorphogenic processes [128,129].…”

“…Solar radiation not only includes the visible spectrum (400-700 nm) necessary for photosynthesis, but also other types of radiation. Near 7% of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the Sun is within the ultraviolet radiation (UVR) spectrum (200-400 nm) [128][129][130]. UVR has been divided into three different bands: UV-A (315-400 nm), UV-B (280-315 nm) and UV-C (200-280 nm) [130,131].…”
