The utilization of nitrone spin traps in a study of the photochemistry of pigment dispersions

Abstract: Examples of the use of nitrone spin traps for the elucidation of reaction mechanisms during the illumination of pigment dispersions are presented. Detection of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals with CdS, phthalocyanine, and ZnO is discussed. Singlet oxygen is also detectable with spin traps by following the O2 consumption in these dispersions as a function of illumination. These results are discussed in relation to the applications of pigment dispersions in both novel imaging systems and solar energy utilizatio… Show more

“…In this work, we describe an esr spin trapping investigation on the formation of N; radicals in a photoactivated Ti02 suspension. The esr spin trapping technique is a powerful tool for detecting the formation of short-lived radicalsand has been fruitfully employed in work with semiconductors (6)(7)(8). The spin trapping of electrochemically generated azidyl radicals has been previously described (9,10).…”
