The utility of the venous clinical severity score in 682 limbs treated by radiofrequency saphenous vein ablation

Abstract: As determined by the venous clinical severity score, treatment of saphenous vein reflux with endovenous radiofrequency ablation results in the clinical improvement of symptoms and aids in the healing of venous ulcers. Age, female sex, and tumescent volume are associated with high success rates of occlusion. We found the venous clinical severity score to be an excellent stand-alone tool for assessing outcomes after saphenous vein radiofrequency ablation.

“…These newer methods may have some of the advantages of UGFS. Previous reports suggest that the incidence of bruising after RFA and EVLA, while significantly less than after surgery, is still higher than the 7·2 per cent rate after UGFS in the present study 7,16,17,20,21 .…”

“…The severity of insuffi ciency in GSVs or SSVs was determined, vein diameter was measured, and mapping and determination of refl ux sources in the aff ected veins were performed during the CDUS examination. The current venous insuffi ciency symptoms were assessed based on the venous clinical severity score (VCSS), whereas the clinical fi ndings were assessed based on the clinical, aetiological, anatomical and pathophysiological classifi cation for chronic venous disorders (CEAP) [17,18]. The quality of life (QOL) assessment, including general pain and associated physical, social, and psychological parameters, was performed using the Chronic Venous Insufficiency Quality of Life Questionnaire (CIVIQ ), version 2 [19].…”

“…Vasquez et al [6] examined the results of RFA on venous clinical severity score and CEAP classification in 682 limbs treated with RFA. Overall mean baseline venous clinical severity scores were 8.8 at baseline and 3.6 at last follow-up visit.…”
