“…Imaging by CT reliably determines the bone defect of the skull base, 16 whereas MRI gives information on associated brain abnormalities. 17 In children, the use of CT should be restricted, and generally, an MRI is sufficient, even in skull base pathologies. A biopsy of the suspected meningo(encephalo)cele is contraindicated.…”
Congenital pathologies of the anterior skull base are rare, challenging to diagnose, and present as clinical emergencies. An interdisciplinary surgical approach is needed for best functional and aesthetic results.

“…MRI is also useful to detect other intracranial anomalies 5,8,20 . In some people, CT scan has failed to distinguish between chronic nasal inflammation and an intranasal meningoencephalocele 24 . Seemingly, both imaging modalities should be used before surgical planning 22 …”
A transfrontal craniotomy with excision of the meningoencephalocele and closure of the defect can be an effective treatment for an intranasal meningoencephalocele in dogs.
“…3D CT is particularly useful in planning operative strategy. Zinreich et al 21 reported three patients where the diagnosis of intranasal meningoencephalocele was made by MRI. In these cases, initial clinical evaluation and CT failed to distinguish between chronic inflammation and intranasal meningoencephalocele.…”
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
