The usefulness of soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) in differentiating anemia occurring in young children

Abstract: We evaluated the usefulness of soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) and of the sTfR/log ferritin index(sTfR/logF) in the differentiation of anemia in young children. 96 children, aged 6-36 months, were examined. From these, four groups were distinguished: 1 - (IDA): 33 children with anemia due to iron deficiency; 2 -(IA): 19 children with infectious anemia without iron deficiency; 3 - (IA + ID): 16 children with infectious anemia and iron deficiency; and 4 - a comparator group (CG): 28 healthy children without i… Show more

“…sTfR values >1.55 mg/L, and sTfR Index values >1.03mg/L were predictive of iron deficiency anemia in the presence or absence of inflammation and chronic disease. Kamar et al 18 study showed following result which is similar to our study.…”

“…A correlation analysis showed statistically significant relationships between both sTfR and the sTfR/log ferritin and TIBc and Serum ferritin in IDA children. No such relationship was found in other groups, in accordance to the results of Kamer et al [8]. Other authors did not show any statistical significant correlations between sTfR and biochemical iron indice [21].…”

“…Soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) is a truncated extracellular form of the membrane transferrin receptor produced by proteolysis [7]. The parameter defined as TfR-F index is calculated in terms of sTfR/log ferritin and sTfR are good indicators of iron deficiency and could be useful in the differential diagnostics of anemia [8].…”

“…Transferrin saturation index (TSI) was calculated by the following formula: iron concentration divided by TIBC and multiplied by 100. The TSI > 16% values were regarded as correct ones 25. Serum ferritin levels were measured to assess the iron status of our patients by Enzyme Linked Immune Sorbent Assay (ELISA) technique using (RAMCO LABORATORIES kit, INC., USA), and HCV antibodies were detected by ELISA using (AUTOBIO DIAGNOSTICS, China) kit on microplate reader (Bio-Rad 680 Hercules, California, USA).…”
