The usefulness of contrast during exercise echocardiography for the assessment of systolic pulmonary pressure

Abstract: Background: The systolic pulmonary artery pressure (PAPs) can be accurately estimated, noninvasively, using continuous-wave Doppler (CWD) ultrasound measurement of the peak velocity of a tricuspid regurgitant (TR) jet.

“…37 In people, this has been described as a valuable tool to better visualize tricuspid regurgitation and of particular utility in the assessment of PH. 38 However in the present study, even with the aid of SonoVue Ò , tricuspid regurgitation could not be measured in any of the dogs at any examination point. Considering the expense of this substance, and being unaware of a clinically relevant indication we do not recommend this substance to be used in daily practice at the present time.…”

“…RVSP had no impact on predisposition to adverse outcomes in patients undergoing contrast echocardiography. Moreover, contrast agents may represent a valuable tool for the assessment of pulmonary systolic pressure [49]. All these clinical data are in accordance with experimental models in pulmonary hypertensive dogs who received the agent Optison in usual human doses [50].…”
