“…However, research and practice recommendations for supporting older autistic adults in residential care have been developed [ 135 ], community participation programs across ages for autistic adults with ID are emerging [ 136 ], and self-care practices in older autistic adults have been described [ 132 ]. Future work may continue to examine supports for non-autistic older adults (e.g., the use of visual supports for dementia care; [ 137 , 138 ]) and in individuals with ID (e.g., behavioral activation; [ 139 ]) for use with older autistic adults. While much of the work on autism and aging has been conducted in the United States, there is growing research being conducted across the world, including the UK, Netherlands, and Australia, suggesting that the need to focus on autism in older age is a global health issue.…”

“…HMIs can be precious in case of cognitive impairment and sensory loss [2,3]. Especially in cases of cognitive impairment [4], being able to clearly and effectively present visual information (e.g., in support of indoor navigation, by signalling a direction to take or avoid, or in support of home safety, by signalling hazards) can be a tremendous support to individuals affected by this condition [5][6][7]. Such visual information can aid understanding and decision-making even in the presence of varying degrees of cognitive impairment, which would have a significant negative impact on quality of life unless properly supported or compensated.…”
