The use of trained volunteers in the response to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest – the GoodSAM experience

Abstract: In England, fewer than 1 in 10 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims survive to hospital discharge. This could be substantially improved by increasing bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator use. GoodSAM is a mobile-phone, app-based system alerting trained individuals to nearby cardiac arrests. 'Responders' can be notified by bystanders using the GoodSAM 'Alerter' function. In London, when a 999 call-handler identifies cardiac arrest, in addition to dispatching the usual p… Show more

“…Looking ahead, resource constraints may compel PAROS DS's to capitalize on advances in technology. The growing smartphone penetration rate in Asia presents a ripe opportunity for the introduction of mobilephone positioning systems that dispatch CPR-trained lay volunteers, such as GoodSAM and PulsePoint [27]. These efforts may increase bystander CPR rates and decrease time to first compression and defibrillation.…”

“…Video footage is streamed from scene to the control room using the GoodSAM (Smartphone Activated Medics; www. goodsamapp.org) platform, a globally used tool to task first responders to suspected out-of-hospital cardiac arrests [10]. The GoodSAM Instant-on-Scene function™ provides the HEMS dispatcher with the ability to request the caller of the emergency number to activate the video camera on their mobile phone and securely stream live video footage in real time to the control room.…”

“…Hence, these systems rely on the person, who alerts the CFR, as well as the CFR to judge the situation. Some SBA systems allow activation of CFR by both medical laypersons and emergency medical dispatch centres (34).…”
