The Use of the Newest Vital Sign Health Literacy Instrument in Adolescents With Sickle Cell Disease

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to discuss the use of the Newest Vital Sign (NVS) health literacy instrument in adolescents with sickle cell disease. The NVS evaluates both literacy and numeracy (the ability to understand and work with numbers) as well as the ability to locate and apply information. It is important to validate the NVS for use in adolescents, as the only currently validated instrument, the Rapid Estimate of Adolescent Literacy in Medicine-Teen (REALM-Teen), does not measure numeracy or the abili… Show more

“…Several studies have also assessed the reliability and validity of the NVS in children and adolescents with mixed results due to inconsistencies in ages of the samples (Driessnack, Chung, Perkhounkova, & Hein, ; Howe, Van Scoyoc, Alexander, & Stevenson, ; Warsh, Chari, Badaczewski, Hossain, & Sharif, ). Because very little validity and reliability data exists on the use of the NVS in adolescents, validity and reliability of the NVS for use in adolescents with SCD was examined in the previous pilot study (Caldwell, Carter, Becker, & Mackert, ). Face validity was performed on the NVS by the PI as well as other experts in SCD and health literacy, and the instrument was deemed valid by this standard.…”

“…The internal consistency for the NVS in this population was Cronbach's α = .627. Thus, the pilot showed adequate validity and reliability for the use of the NVS in adolescents with SCD (Caldwell et al, ).…”

“…HL was assessed using the Newest Vital Sign (NVS), a simple tool that assesses comprehension of a food label. The NVS has been well validated against well‐accepted measures of HL in adults; likewise, the NVS has been used to evaluate HL in numerous studies of adolescents and has been validated against gold‐standard tests of reading comprehension in adolescents, including adolescents with SCD . In the NVS, participants are presented with a nutrition label and are asked to answer six questions that require mathematical skills and the ability to read and make decisions based on written information.…”

[35][36][37][38][39][40] In the NVS, participants are presented with a nutrition label and are asked to answer six questions that require mathematical skills and the ability to read and make decisions based on written information. In addition to analyzing raw NVS scores, scores were also categorized as adequate (score ≥4) or inadequate (score <4), as described previously.…”

“…Newest Vital Sign (NVS) is a quick and accurate screening test for limited HL. NVS was chosen because it was not only reliable in primary health care setting for adults, but also among adolescence population (Caldwell, Carter, Becker, & Mackert, 2018). The NVS evaluated both literacy and numeracy (the ability to understand and work with numbers) as well as the ability to locate and apply information.…”
