The use of the “Endocrine Circuit” as an active learning methodology to aid in the understanding of the human endocrine system

Abstract: The search for more efficient teaching methodologies is a great challenge for Brazilian educators, since most classes are still traditional (theoretical) and have little student involvement during the learning process. Active learning methodologies, where students play a central role in the learning process, are proving to be more effective and interesting when it comes to acquiring knowledge. Thus we decided to develop an innovative technique for teaching Human Endocrine Physiology, called “Endocrine Circuit.… Show more

“…This was evidenced by the improvement in the test scores and by the decrease in the number of incorrect answers provided by the students who performed the portfolio activity. The portfolio method, as well as other active teaching strategies (11,12,31,32,(37)(38)(39), can increase the students' interest and knowledge retention, promote interaction among the students, and stimulate problem-solving.…”

“…1). Moreover, the pretest-posttest designs are common, adequate, and well accepted in educational research ( 52) and have been widely used to analyze and evaluate the effects of new and innovative educational approaches in student learning (5,11,16,53,(61)(62)(63)(64). The score mean obtained by students in the Pre-iM tests suggests that learning gains would not be obtained using only teaching expository methods (Fig.…”
