The Use of Television in the Development of Career Awareness For an Ethnically Diverse Elementary School Population

Abstract

The development of ethnic and racial attitudes in children is a well-documented subject. At the same time, a great deal of research has been completed on the attitudes of children toward occupational orientation and the internal and external influences on career awareness.Nevertheless, information is lacking about the convergence of these two ideas or the effect of racial and ethnic attitudes on career preference and awareness.The pattern of ethnic attitude formation toward careers among young children can be explored, however, and how television influences these attitudes can be demonstrated. This influence can be used as a major tool for shaping young children's attitudes toward career preference. ATTITUDINAL INFLUENCERSParents have the greatest influence over children's attitudinal development during the early years of development (ages 0-12 years). This comes normally from our society's benevolent and egalitarian posture, for one of the most characteristic and impressive attributes of American parents is dedication to children.
