Elemental, stable carbon isotope, and lignin analyses were carried out to characterize the organic matter in sediments from Site 932 on the Amazon Fan. The lignin compositions of sedimentary organic matter in Subunits IIA and IIB at this site resembled those of fine-and coarse-suspended particles from the present-day Amazon River. The lignin concentrations and isotopic composition of organic carbon suggest that the organic matter in Subunit IIA sediments is composed of varying amounts of marine (85% to 20%) and terrestrial (15% to 80%) contributions, whereas in Subunit IIB, it is exclusively terrestrial in origin. The compositions of lignin phenols indicate that the vegetation of the Amazon Basin did not change appreciably during the period represented by the sediments in Site 932. The data also illustrate the depositional differences that were responsible for the formation of the various lithologic units at the site.

We reconstructed water quality changes for 1800 to 2000 in Charlotte Harbor (Florida), a shallow subtropical estuary, by using a suite of biological and geochemical proxies in dated sediments collected in the region of a present day, midsummer hypoxic zone. The declining freshwater loading into the estuary from 1931 to the 1980s is not the probable causal agent encouraging the appearance or expansion of a hypoxia zone (measuring up to 90 km 2 in summer). Rather, the reconstructed trends in nitrogen loading indicate increased phytoplankton production has likely caused a decline in bottom water oxygen concentrations. Sedimentary biogenic silica (BSi), carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus concentrations increased concurrently with known or inferred changes in nutrient loadings. There were direct relationships between phytoplankton pigments and BSi, heavier ␦ 34 S with increased carbon loading, and sequestration of P, Al, and Fe as carbon loading increased. The results from the sediment analyses and the results from mixing models using C : N ratios and ␦ 13 C suggest an estuarine system that is responsive to increased carbon loading from the nitrogen-limited phytoplankton community and whose sediments are becoming increasingly anoxic as a result. The present nitrogen loading is about three times above that prior to the 1800s, suggesting that without management intervention the anticipated doubling of the watershed's population from 1990 to 2020 will greatly increase the nitrogen loading to this estuary and will lead to much higher amounts of phytoplankton biomass and accumulation and exacerbate hypoxic conditions.

Résumé Des analyses physiques (susceptibilité magnétique, densité, porosité et couleur), géochimiques (C org. , C inorg. , N), isotopiques ( 13 C et 15 N de la matière organique) et micropaléontologiques (foraminifères, diatomées, kystes de dinoflagellés, pollen, spores etc.) ont été réalisées dans les sédiments d'une carotte de ~2 m prélevée dans le bassin supérieur du fjord du Saguenay. La séquence étudiée représente environ 330 ans de sédimentation. Deux unités sédimentaires peuvent y être définies. Elles indiquent des changements majeurs dans la dynamique sédimentaire. La base de la séquence (endessous de ~70 cm) renferme des apports terrigènes dominants dont témoignent de faibles teneurs en 13 C et 15N de la matière organique, des rapports C/N élevés, la présence de carbonates détritiques et une faible concentration de microfossiles marins. Cette unité aurait été mise en place à la suite du tremblement de terre de 1663. La deuxième unité (~70-0 cm) présente de fortes teneurs en C org. , des apports biogéniques marins notables et évoque une sédimentation de type hémipélagique. Les assemblages diversifiés de dinokystes et les concentrations élevées de diatomées y témoignent d'une productivité planctonique autotrophe et hétérotrophe. L'abondance des réseaux organiques de foraminifères révèle une productivité benthique considérable, mais la rareté de leurs tests indique une dissolution du carbonate de calcium. Enfin, les profils polliniques illustrent, au sommet de la séquence (30-0 cm), l'augmentation des apports rudéraux en relation avec le déboisement récent.
