The use of RUSLE and GCMs to predict potential soil erosion associated with climate change in a monsoon-dominated region of eastern India

The large-scale water-induced erosion is one of the most determining elements on land degradation in subtropical monsoon-dominated region. From this large-scale erosion, the fertility of the agricultural land has been decline consequently. So, estimation of the amount of erosion and its accurate prediction is necessary for escaping from this hazardous situation. In this study, the application of evidential belief function (EBF), spatial logistic regression (SLR) and ensemble of EBF and SLR to estimate the erosion potentiality with the help of ArcGIS and Soil and water assessment tool (SWAT). The average annual soil erosion has been estimated with the help of revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) and geographical information system (GIS). Apart from this to evaluate the importance of morphotectonic parameters on soil erosion, the correlation between erosion potentiality and average annual soil erosion has been quantified. In large-scale erosion, there is a direct impact of storm rainfall event in monsoon period in the entire subtropical region. Here, in erosion potentiality assessment, the optimal capacity of ensemble EBF-SLR is higher than the single alone methods, i.e., EBF and SLR. So, the mentioned approaches can be applied in soil erosion research in subtropical environment with considering the erosion causal parameters. This type of information can be helpful to the decision-maker and stakeholders to take proper initiative to reducing the rate of erosion. The main task of the future researcher is to implement this method more accurate ways with considering more reliable variables and slight modifications of the approaches in keeping in the view of regional environment.

Changes in land use, increasing of agricultural areas to the detriment of wooded ones, and poor management of agricultural land, along with the impact of current changes in the climate (reflected in the increase of the climate aggression index) makes soil erosion one of the main risks associated with improper land use, with a direct impact on its productivity and an indirect impact on human beings. The aim of this study is to assess the risk induced by surface soil erosion on land use, using as our main method of investigation the development of two models of integrated spatial analysis of the territory: a derived model of the universal soil loss equation (USLE) and a qualitative model that integrates the result of soil erosion assessment with the database representing the land use. This was carried out in order to highlight the impact on the territory. The spatial analysis models were developed on a structure of vector spatial databases, through which the soil type, soil texture, climate aggression coefficient, and land use were mapped, and alphanumeric databases, representing the market cost of land, in EUROs, that highlight the quality of cultivated land (in terms of productive economic potential). The induced risk estimation is based on a qualitative rating of soil erosion vulnerability on a scale from 1 to 5 (1-low vulnerability; 5-high vulnerability) and of the reduction of the economic value of the land (according to the vulnerability rating). The implemented methodology highlights the quantitative risk, with a maximum value of about 46.000 EUROs, spatially identified on large surfaces on the outskirts of the Jibou municipality. It is mainly caused by the impact of soil erosion on large areas of orchards, which provide necessary products for human consumption. The present methodology can be implemented on similar areas and can be used as a model of good practices in risk assessment based on financial losses by local public authorities.

Climate change has an effect on ecosystems and people all around the globe and causes land degradation. A long‐term decline in biological output, loss of ecological integrity, and a fall in the economic worth of the land are all signs of “land degradation”, a downbeat trend in land condition. In the red lateritic zone of the tropical area, where “climate change” and “land degradation” are related, they impact one another. On the other hand, due to the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), which slow the rate of carbon absorption, and the extent of various existing land degradation processes, which are worsened in pace and magnitude by “climate change”. The world's expanding population poses a challenge to supplying the rising demand for food in recent decades. The need for additional land for farming, feed, and other forms of production is fuelled by poverty and the destruction of the environment. In tropical regions, “soil erosion” caused by “water and wind, salinization and alkalinity, acidity, losses of organic carbon, nutrient imbalance, pollution/contamination by toxic substances, and soil sealing and capping” all call for immediate action to stop the land degradation process and sustainably restore productivity for environmental security and food security for the world's expanding population. After fulfilling the requirement systematic knowledge about soil, scientific use of natural resources (water, land, minerals, vegetation, air and biodiversity) will present a healthy planet with a healthy ecological system for future generations.
