The Use of Robust Smoothers in Nuclear Material Safeguards

Abstract: It has previously been shown that smoothing algorithms can provide the basis for a method to detect nuclear material diversions and losses and moreover can also provide a general approach to industrial statistical process control. The present paper extends this result by showing that a set of robust smoothers also produces equivalent methods that can be used in nuclear material safeguards algorithms. Further, it is shown that these smoothers are somewhat more sensitive to loss points than the previously studie… Show more

“…Multiple items can share a systematic error due to calibration effects, leading to a systematic positive or negative error until the assay method is recalibrated. Time series modeling and various forms of data mining, such as nonparametric smoothing, have been proposed in the NMA context in response to the fact that the loss detection probability of small sustained ("protracted") loss of SNM over multiple time periods is lower than desired (Prasad et al, 1995a(Prasad et al, , 1995bHamburg et al, 1996;Grznar et al, 1997;Downing et al, 1978). Such data mining requires up-front training data prior to testing for SNM loss.…”

“…Interestingly, this is the same general technique used to clarify and enhance digitally transmitted pictures, such as of astronomical objects. More distantly related instances of linear filtration or smoothing, for example, are described and reviewed in recent work by Grznar et al 11,12 COMPUTATIONS Molecular graphs, hydrogen-suppressed and with the interatomic carbon-carbon edge count set at unity, were derived from the alkane series, ethane through the octane isomers, listed in Table 2. The IUPAC system of numbering was used, as displayed in Figure la, which pictures a modified stem-and-leaf graph of 2-methylbutane.…”
