There is still limited knowledge about the interrelations among the age of initiation of different substances and the diverse aspects of adolescent functioning. The present cross-national study aimed at exploring the presence of a time-order pattern of age of initiation of different substances and the relationships with personal and relational resources and vulnerabilities, drawn from the problem behaviour theory by Jessor et al. (1991). The sample consisted of 970 adolescents from Italy and The Netherlands, of whom 198 were fully initiated in alcohol, first tobacco use, regular tobacco smoking and marijuana. In both countries, cumulative scale analyses showed the presence of a pattern of age of initiation in the different types of substances. The earlier the age of onset of one substance, the earlier the age of onset of the other substances. Furthermore, the higher the personal resources and the healthy, conventional parents and friend models, the older the age of initiation of different substances by both Dutch and Italian adolescents. With respect to the use of alcohol, the higher the relational resources, the older the age of initiation. Conversely, the higher the adolescents perceived relational vulnerabilities, the younger their age of initiation in drugs. Kulturvergleichende Evaluation eines Lebenskompetenzenprogramms gegen Substanzmissbrauch im Jugendalter Fragestellung: Diese Studie vergleicht Prozess- und Ergebnisevaluation eines Präventionsprogramms gegen Substanzmissbrauch zwischen deutschen und italienischen Jugendlichen. Methodik: Datenanalysen basieren auf zwei Evaluationsstudien (Prä-Post-Design, Kontroll- und Versuchsgruppe). Ergebnisse: Die Befunde zeigen, dass das Programm in beiden Kontexten akzeptiert war und mit hoher Qualität implementiert wurde. In der deutschen und italienischen Stichprobe wurden ähnliche Risiko- und Schutzfaktoren für Substanzmissbrauch positiv beeinflusst (z. B. Bindungen an der Schule). Ebenso positiv wirkte sich das Programm auf das Einstiegsalter in den regelmäßigen Alkoholkonsum und auf das Konsumverhalten in beiden Stichproben aus. Schlussfolgerungen: Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass das Programm in beiden Ländern erfolgreich als universelle Präventionsstrategie eingesetzt werden kann.

Jessor et al.’s (2003) model of relationships among protective factors (models protection, controls protection, support protection), risk factors (models risk, opportunity risk, vulnerability risk), and adolescent risk behavior (delinquency, problem drinking, marijuana use, tobacco use, sexual activity) was investigated in adolescent samples of both genders from Italy (n = 488, M age = 17 years) and the Netherlands (n = 480, M age = 17 years). After accounting for sociodemographic variables, risk and protective factors and their interactions accounted for 46–52% of additional variation in risk behavior. Although levels of risk, protection, and risk behavior differed by country and by sex, the association of risk and protective factors with risk behavior was similar for Italian and Dutch youth and for boys and girls. Controls protection (e.g., intolerance of deviancy, parental control and disapproval, friends’ disapproval) and models of risk (family and peer models of risk behavior) had the strongest associations with adjustment. Additionally, controls protection moderated the influence of models risk among the Italians while support protection buffered vulnerability risk among the Dutch. These data support the utility of the explanatory model in these national contexts.
