The use of probiotics is a common practice of current shrimp aquaculture. Despite the immunophysiological responses that have been measured in shrimp exposed to probiotics, no information is currently available on the effect of this practice on the intestinal microbiota. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of a probiotic mixture on the intestinal microbiota of shrimp cultured under farm conditions. A culture-independent method based on high-throughput-sequencing (16S rRNA) was used to examine intestinal bacterial communities. A traditional system (without probiotics) was used as the reference. Targeted metagenomics analysis revealed that the probiotic mixture was based on bacteria in the phyla Proteobacteria and Firmicutes. A total of 23 species of bacteria were detected in the probiotic mixture; of these, 11 were detected in the intestine of shrimp reared in both systems, and 12 were novel for the system. Eight of the novel species were detected in shrimp cultured with the probiotic mixture; however, none of these novel species were related to marine or inclusively aquacultural environments, and only one (Bacillus subtilis) was recognized as probiotic for shrimp. The use of the probiotic mixture modified the bacterial profile of the shrimp intestine; however, most of the bacteria incorporated into the intestine were nonindigenous to the marine environment with no previous evidence of probiotic effects on any marine organism. The use of this probiotic mixture may represent a risk of causing environmental imbalances, particularly because farms using these types of probiotic mixtures discharge their effluents directly into the ocean without prior treatment.

Abstract:The farming of edible insects is an alternative strategy for the production of protein-rich food and feed with a low ecological footprint. The industrial production of insect-derived protein is more cost-effective and energy-efficient than livestock farming or aquaculture. The mealworm Tenebrio molitor is economically among the most important species used for the large-scale conversion of plant biomass into protein. Here, we review the mass rearing of this species and its conversion into food and feed, focusing on challenges such as the contamination of food/feed products with bacteria from the insect gut and the risk of rapidly spreading pathogens and parasites. We propose solutions to prevent the outbreak of infections among farmed insects without reliance on antibiotics. Transgenerational immune priming and probiotic bacteria may provide alternative strategies for sustainable insect farming.

The present study examined the health status of marron Cherax cainii after feeding with a customised probiotic B. Mycoides supplemented diets at various feeding period by measuring intestinal bacterial population, hepatosomatic indices (Hiw), total haemocyte count (THC), bacteraemia and survival rate. During a 6 week feeding trial, the marron were fed at a rate of 1.5 % of the total biomass per day with a commercial marron feed (basal diet) and B. mycoides (10 8 CFU/g of feed) supplemented diet. The first group of marron was solely fed on the basal diet while group two, three and four were fed with supplemented probiotic for one week, two weeks and four weeks, respectively before changing to the basal diet only.The results suggested that intestinal bacterial population was higher in the probiotic fed groups compared to the basal diet fed marron. Among the probiotic fed groups, the highest intestinal bacterial population was observed in marron fed probiotic for four weeks. In addition, Hiw of the marron fed probiotic for four weeks was also higher than other feeding groups, whereas Hiw of basal diet fed marron was significantly lower compared to probiotic fed groups. No mortality was observed in any feeding group.The longest probiotic feeding period (four weeks) resulted in a higher immune status as indicated by higher THC and lower bacteraemia. However, after shifting to a basal diet, a reduced intestinal bacterial population, Hiw and THC were observed in all groups, except bacteraemia. In conclusion, periodic or continues probiotic B. Mycoides feeding is required to maintain its high population levels and better health benefits in marron.
