The article aims at exploring the literature on town centre delimitation methods over the last sixty years. Specifically, the first section explores the content of the term town centre, while the second one proposes an organisation of town centre delimitation research in three main periods. The third section comprises the main corpus of the article, as several town centre delimitation methodologies of the last sixty years are presented and discussed. For their presentation, a three tiered analysis is introduced. In the first stage the decisions of researchers regarding centrality estimators are discussed, in the second stage the study focuses on the choices of the spatial units, in which the chosen variables will be studied, and in the third stage the study discusses the methods that are used to characterise each of the studied spatial units as central versus non-central. Based on the analysis, the article concludes that town centre delimitation is an issue which transcends various scientific disciplines and that each of these disciplines comprehends the centre of a town in a unique way. Thus, future methods of town centre delimitation should take into account the choices made in each of the three stages presented above, and should also link the above choices to the objectives and the theoretical context of the study.

A geospatial pattern is a regular, recognizable (repeatable) arrangement of phenomena on the earth surface. In this thesis, when we refer to a spatial or spatio-temporal pattern, we in fact mean a geospatial pattern. Spatial patterns are the traces left behind by self-organizing systems. Self-organization means that systems evolve to a steady organized state based on local interactions. Many systems in biology and ecology show this type of regularity. Selforganization is thought to be the result of bottom-up interactions (driven by To get a better grip on spatio-temporal patterns, we need to understand the temporal component of the processes that produce these patterns. The trajectory of a system is the order in which the systems moves from one state into another. In principle a chronological system is a system that progresses from an initial state to a final state without loops (cyclic trajectory) or parallel trajectories (branching system). 1.3 Agent-Based Modelling Where clustering focusses on the detection and recognition of spatio-temporal patterns, agent-based modelling is concerned with the reproduction of these patterns. Modellers want to reproduce patterns because they provide information about the system being modelled. Modelling techniques that can reproduce emergent behaviour, e.g. Agent-based modelling (ABMs), can be used to model and reproduce complex patterns. Abstract:Rapid urbanization has caused numerous problems, and the urban spatial structure has been a hot topic in sustainable development management. Urban spatial structure is affected by a series of factors. Thus, the research model should synthetically consider the spatial and non-spatial relationship of every element. Here, we propose an extended Voronoi diagram for exploring the urban land spatial pattern. In essence, we first used a principal component analysis method to construct attribute evaluation indicators and obtained the attribute distance for each indicator. Second, we integrated spatial and attribute distances to extend the comparison distance for Voronoi diagrams, and then, we constructed the Voronoi aggregative homogeneous map of the study area. Finally, we make a spatial autocorrelation analysis by using GeoDA and SPSS software. Results show that: (1) the residential land cover aggregation is not significant, but spatial diffusion is obvious; (2) the commercial land cover aggregation is considerable; and (3) the spatial agglomeration degree of the industrial land cover is increased and mainly located in urban fringes. According to the neo-Marxist theory, we briefly analyzed the driving forces for shaping the urban spatial structure. To summarize, our approach yields important insights into the urban spatial structure characterized by attribute similarity with geospatial proximity, which contributes to a better understanding of the urban growth mechanism. In addition, it explicitly identifies ongoing urban transformations, potentially supporting the planning for sustainable urban land use and protection.
