The Use of Pit and Fissure Sealants—A Literature Review

Abstract: This paper reviews the literature and discusses the latest updates on the use of pit and fissure sealants. It demonstrates the effectiveness of pit and fissure sealants in preventing caries and the management of early carious lesions. It compares the use of different sealant materials and their indications. It describes the application technique for sealants. It also reviews the cost-effectiveness of sealants as a preventive strategy. From this review and after the discussion of recently published studies on p… Show more

“…Another possibility is related to the fact that caries is a preventable condition. 27,28 Although genes involved in DDE would be indirectly associated with the increased risk for caries due to the fact that DDE increases the risk for caries, 29,30 this association was not observed here. This was probably due to the other modifying factors that are involved in caries susceptibility.…”

“…27 Water fluoridation, fluoride therapies, placement of dental sealants and fluoride-releasing filling materials are implicated in preventing dental caries. 40 Other appropriate oral health care approaches are utilized in the prevention and control of dental caries. An attempt is made to study the effect of honey in preventing dental caries in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment.…”
