Background Oestrogen (ES) and growth hormone (GH) are hormones that may have a role in caries aetiology and developmental defects of enamel (DDE) since their receptors (ERs and GHR) are expressed during amelogenesis. Aim To evaluate whether genetic polymorphisms in the genes that codify the ERα (ESR1) and GHR are associated with caries experience and DDE in children. Design Two hundred and sixteen children of both genders, aged 9‐12 years, were examined and classified according to caries and DDE phenotype. Genomic DNA was extracted from buccal cells in saliva. Genetic polymorphisms in ERS1 (rs1884051 and rs12154178) and GHR (rs297305, rs2940913, rs2910875, and rs1509460) were genotyped using TaqMan chemistry. Data were analysed by PLINK, while the chi‐square test was used to compare allele and genotype distributions (alpha of 5%). Results A total of 131 children (60.7%) had caries experience, and 43 (19.9%) presented DDE. Genotype and allele distributions were not associated with caries experience (P > 0.05). Genotype and allele distributions between DDE, affected and unaffected, were associated with the polymorphism rs12154178 in ESR1 (P = 0.01 and P = 0.001, respectively) and with the polymorphism rs1509460 in GHR (P = 0.05 and P = 0.02, respectively). Conclusions Genetic polymorphisms in ERS1 (rs12154178) and GHR (rs1509460) are associated with DDE.

Honey is a natural medicine that has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer and antioxidant properties. The medicinal value of honey is attributed to several components including hygroscopic sugars, and enzymes like diastase, invertase, catalase and glucose oxidase. Glucose oxidase catalyzes the oxidation of glucose to hydrogen peroxide and gluconolactone. The hydrogen peroxide is further converted to water and oxygen by enzyme catalase. The low moisture content and high viscosity of honey provide protective barrier against bacterial infection. Honey not only has an excellent nutritional value but it is also used as an ointment or a drug as a complementary and alternative medicine called "Apitherapy". This mini review presents the medicinal value of honey in the treatment of dental and oral diseases/conditions such as oral ulcer, oral candidiasis, stomatitis, dental carries, plaque, gingivitis, periodontal disease and orthodontic treatment, and tooth extraction.

Indocyanine green (ICG) has been widely used in medical imaging, such as in retinal angiography. Here, we describe a pilot ex vivo study of ICG‐assisted near‐infrared fluorescence (NIRF) dental imaging in the first (700–950 nm for ICG‐NIRF‐I) and second (1000–1700 nm for ICG‐NIRF‐II) NIR windows using human extracted teeth; our study is compared with the traditional prevalent X‐ray imaging and NIR II illumination (NIRi‐II, 1310 nm) without ICG enhancement. The results show that ICG fluorescence has much better imaging contrast in both windows compared with NIRi‐II (by quantitatively comparing NIR intensity of the critical neighboring structures, such as enamel and dentin). Cracked teeth, notoriously hard to diagnose by dental X‐ray and computed tomography, were clearly profiled in NIRF dental imaging. An insidious occlusal caries, missing in X‐ray imaging, became a bright dot that was readily observed in ICG‐NIRF‐I images. For dental decay, NIRF imaging with ICG enhancement could clearly delineate the decay boundary. NIRF in both windows distinguished interproximal and occlusal superficial caries. Overall, ICG‐assisted NIRF dental imaging has unique advantages in identifying cracked teeth and insidious caries. The two NIR imaging windows used in our study might one day serve as noninvasive and nonionizing‐radiation methods for the diagnosis of critical dental diseases in situ.
