The use of open data as a material for learning

Abstract: Open data has potential value as a material for use in learning activities. However, approaches to harnessing this are not well understood or in mainstream use in education. In this research, early adopters from a diverse range of educational projects and teaching settings were interviewed to explore their rationale for using open data in teaching, how suitable activity designs could be achieved, and the practical challenges of using open data. A thematic analysis was conducted to identify patterns and relatio… Show more

“…This concept made diverse data sets from various organizations publicly available, including government spending, research outcomes, archives, surveys, environmental sensing, and museum collections. While sharing data online is not new, the formalization of open data has created a global movement and led to a huge growth in the breadth and depth of data available [13]. However, approaches to connecting open data to learning design are not in mainstream use.…”

“…However, approaches to connecting open data to learning design are not in mainstream use. Detailed thematic analysis was conducted by Tim Coughlan to identify patterns and relationships in open data-based practices that have already emerged [13]. Results and framework presented in his research offer a conceptual starting point to adapt open data to learning design.…”

“…Open pedagogies, media education and data literacy, need to enable students to become data intermediaries (Davies and Edwards 2012;Magalhaes, Roseira, and Strover 2013), thereby making a positive impact on democracy. The adoption of open data as OER (Atenas andHavemann 2015, 2019;Coughlan 2019) could form a strong basis to raise awareness of socio-political issues, promoting learning through critical thinking, which Brookfield (1987) describes in three phases: (1) determine the hypothesis that guides decisions and actions; (2) verify the accuracy of these assumptions by analysing perspectives, data and information; (3) make informed decisions based on evidence and research.…”

“…The study investigated how the use of Open Data can be a key to the development of transversal skills, including digital and data literacy. [21] investigated the value and challenges of using Open Data in education through the vision of early adopters of Open Data. The author presents a qualitative descriptive design to understand the perspective of Open Data usage in teaching through interviews.…”
