The use of nonablative radiofrequency technology to tighten the lower face and neck

Abstract: The ThermaCool TC system is a radiofrequency device capable of delivering higher energy fluences to a greater volume of tissue than nonablative lasers, with no epidermal injury. It has been successful in treating periorbital rhytides and lifting eyebrows. Given these positive finding for treatment of the upper face, the device has been recently applied to rejuvenate and tighten the skin on the lower face and upper neck. This study shows the efficacy and patient satisfaction with this application. Data were com… Show more

“…Patients had little discomfort during treatment and no downtime. In a 16-patient study [13], Hsu and Kaminer treated the upper neck, jaw line, cheeks, or combinations of these areas. Satisfaction was 36% in patients treated in all three areas compared to 25% in patients treated in fewer areas.…”

“…More recently, the use of non-ablative, radio-frequency (RF) energy has been used to treat laxity in the anterior cruciate ligament, joint capsular region in the human shoulder and the lower face and neck [4][5][6][7]. RF devices have been used in thermal delivery systems to provide the beneficial effects of heat while avoiding some of the downfalls of more standard lasers [8].…”

“…High frequency radiofrequency has been used in cosmetic medicine for the treatment of facial wrinkles [10,12], and naso-labial creases [11,13,14], in order to improve the laxity of the neck [11,15] and to raise eyelids [8,16]. Although a range of clinical studies on humans into the effects of this treatment exist, very few are aimed at understanding its effects on a microscopic level.…”
