The use of NIRS for prediction of intake, digestibility and diet composition in sheep fed mixed grain:roughage diets

Abstract: Sixteen adult sheep fed on different proportions of barley grain and straw (60:40, 45:55, 30: 70 and 15:85) were used to obtain regression equations for prediction of dry matter (DMI) and digestible organic matter (DOMI) intake, dry matter (DMD), organic matter (OMD), crude protein (CPD) and neutral detergent fi bre (NDFD) digestibility, and proportion of straw consumed (% straw) from the NIRS analysis of the faeces. All equations had coeffi cients of determination in calibration higher than 0.65, except tha… Show more

“…Although to a lesser degree, other methods that estimate pasture DMI have been used based on differences in animal mass (Horn, 1981;Le Du and Penning, 1982); components of plant waxes other than alkanes (i.e. alkenes; Lippke et al, 2002); a combination of n-alkanes and 13 C techniques and the use of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) systems (Valiente et al, 2004).…”

“…It has been routinely used for prediction of chemical composition and energy value of feeds (Aufrère et al, 1996), intake and digestibility (Boval et al, 2003(Boval et al, , 2004Decruyenaere et al, 2003;Valiente et al, 2004;Landau et al, 2005), faecal concentration of n-alkanes in beef cattle (Garnsworthy and Unal, 2004) and deers (Ru et al, 2002), and seems to be a promising technique for estimation of diet composition in sheep and goats (Walker et al, 1998(Walker et al, , 2002(Walker et al, , 2007Landau et al, 2004;Valiente et al, 2004).…”
