Background: Hysterosalpingography is an investigative modality used in the evaluation of the uterine cavity, fallopian tubes, and adjacent peritoneal cavity following the injection of contrast material through the cervical canal. Objective: To determine the pattern of pathologies seen in infertile women undergoing hysterosalpingography. Materials and Methods: This prospective research was conducted at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Radiology Departments of the two tertiary health institutions in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, from January to July, 2021. Hysterosalpingography was done for 350 infertile women, after obtaining written informed consent. Data were entered into a pre-designed proforma, and analysed using Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) version 25.0. Results were presented in frequencies and percentages for categorical variables, and mean and standard deviation for continuous variables. Results: The most common tubal finding was blockage; 7 in 10 (71.7%) women had at least one blocked tube. One hundred and nine (31.1%) had both tubes blocked, the left tube was blocked in seventy-nine (22.6%), while the right tube was affected in sixty-three (18.0%) women. Hydrosalpinx affected the right, left and both tubes in 20 (5.7%), 8 (2.3%) and 4 (1.1%) women respectively. Uterine findings were fibroids (21.1%), intrauterine adhesion (3.4%) bicornuate uterus (0.9%) and adenomyosis (1.1%). Conclusion: This study revealed a high incidence of tubal blockage in the women being evaluated for infertility. The plausible reason for this observation may be due to post-abortion sepsis and pelvic inflammatory disease that may have arisen from induced abortion, as observed in our study. Hysterosalpingography remains a very crucial investigative modality that plays a central role in the evaluation of infertile women.

Background: Infertility is a socially distressing medical condition that remains a public health concern in many developing countries, including Nigeria. The objective of the study was to evaluate the pattern of infertility among infertile couples in a tertiary hospital in South-South Nigeria.Methods: A retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study of infertile couples evaluated at the Infertility Clinic of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, South-South Nigeria, between January and December, 2021, was conducted. Case records of all the infertile couples evaluated during the study period were retrieved, and relevant data were extracted from the case records using a pre-designed proforma. Data obtained was analysed using Statistical Product and Service Solutions for Windows® version 25 (SPSS Inc.; Chicago, USA).Results: The incidence rate of infertility was 18.2%. Tubal factor was the most common (104, 55.6%) cause of infertility, with tubal blockage being the commonest (92, 49.2%) tubal pathology. Male factor was implicated in 81, 43.3%, of the cases, a combination of male and female factors in 45, 24.1%, while 5, 2.7%, of the cases were unexplained. Female factor alone was responsible for infertility in 101, 54.0%, of the cases, while male factor alone was identified in 36, 19.2%, of the cases.Conclusions: Our study’s incidence rate for infertility was similar to those reported in other studies in our region. To reduce the incidence of infertility, social reorientation to improve sociocultural practices and poor health-seeking behaviour of couples, should be pursued vigorously.

Background: Bartholin gland cysts and abscesses are common in women of reproductive age and declines after menopause. Organisms implicated in Bartholin abscess include, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacterioides spp. Aim: To determine the incidence, presentation and management of Bartholin gland cysts and abscesses at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, South-South Nigeria, over a five-year period. Settings and Design: This retrospective study was conducted in the Gynaecological Unit of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, South-South, Nigeria, between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2020. Materials and Methods: Relevant data were retrieved, entered into a pre-designed proforma, and analysed. Statistical Analysis: Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 25.0 was used for data analysis. Results were presented in frequencies and percentages for categorical variables. Results: There were 2,478 gynaecological cases managed in our Centre; out of which there were 26 cases of Bartholin cyst and abscess, giving an incidence of 1.05%. Most of the women were ≤ 30 years (14, 53.8%), single (17, 65.4%), nulliparous (13, 50.0%), traders (11, 42.3%), with only primary/secondary education (18, 69.2%). The left Bartholin gland was the most frequently affected (17, 65.4%). A positive microbial culture was obtained in 84% of cases, with Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli being the isolated organisms. Marsupialisation was the treatment modality in all the patients. Conclusion: Women of reproductive age-group should be counselled on this condition and encouraged to keep good perineal hygiene and better sexual conduct so as to reduce the risk of Bartholin cysts and abscesses.
