“…[95][96][97][98] Two case series reported descriptive results in terms of general relief of spasticity (class IV evidence). 95;96 A cross-sectional observational study compared an initial phenol injection (initial group) versus subsequent injections (serial group) in five muscle groups, in both targeted and non-targeted sides, showing a significant reduction in the Ashworth score in both groups.…”

“…No randomized controlled trials evaluating the effect of intrathecal phenol on spasticity due to MS or other causes were identified and four observational studies were reviewed. [96][97][98][99] Two case series reported descriptive results in terms of general relief of spasticity (class IV evidence). 96,97 A cross-sectional observational study compared an initial phenol injection (initial group) versus subsequent injections (serial group) in five muscle groups, in both targeted and non-targeted sides, showing a significant reduction in the Ashworth score in both groups 98 (class IV evidence).…”

“…In the one study which used more explicit outcome measures 78 there appears to have been a marked reduction in adductor spasticity, improved hygiene and improved gait. In the case series of two, 79 one patient was rendered able to sit in a wheelchair (previously unable to) with improved hygiene, while the other was also enabled to sit in a wheelchair, albeit only for 1-2 hours at a time. One case example is cited of a woman who was able to resume sexual relationships after obturator blockade.…”

“…Few details are given about the patients included in the studies, or how they were selected, other than that they suffered from spasticity, with the exception of one report of two cases of patients with painful spasms due to longstanding MS. 79 Two of the case series do include case examples, 80,81 but there is no indication that these are typical of all the cases.…”

“…20,[28][29][30][31] Phenol use in children and adults with spasticity is primarily directed toward nerves that have a minimal sensory component and are easily localizable. Successful results have been reported in patients with multiple etiologies, including multiple sclerosis, stroke, torticollis, brain injury, and cerebral palsy.…”
