The aim of this study was to estimate the association between household income and dental flossing.Methods: This cross-sectional study investigated the impact of household income on flossing among 9,391 adults aged 30+ with ≥20 natural teeth, utilizing data from the seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016)(2017)(2018). Outcome measures included flossing (yes/no), with income categorized into 4 levels: lowest, medium to low, medium to high, and highest. Logistic regression, adjusted for age, gender, brushing frequency, recent dental exams, periodontitis, smoking, and alcohol use, was employed to evaluate the influence of socioeconomic status on oral hygiene practices. Results:In the highest income group, flossing was 62.6% more prevalent than in the lowest income group (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.63; 95% CI, 1.27-2.08). The strongest association between income levels and flossing was observed in individuals aged ≥70 years (aOR, 3.64; 95% CI, 1.86-7.11), with a decreasing strength of association in the 60s (aOR, 1.72; 95% CI, 1.05-2.84) and 50s age groups (aOR, 1.69; 95% CI, 1.07-2.68). Higher-income women demonstrated a higher frequency of flossing than their lower-income counterparts (aOR, 1.67; 95% CI, 1.24-2.23). Higher-income individuals without periodontitis were more likely to floss (aOR, 1.64; 95% CI, 1.23-2.18), and among those with periodontitis, flossing was significantly associated only with the highest income category (aOR, 1.64; 95% CI, 1.10-2.44). Conclusions:The findings of this study indicate a significant correlation between higher household income levels and an increased prevalence of flossing.

Background This study aimed to investigate the associations between metal exposures and periodontitis among U.S. adults, as well as the mediated effect of biological aging. Methods Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009–2014, we explored the single and mixed impacts of metal exposures on periodontitis through adjusted weighted logistic regression, robust Poisson regression, restricted cubic spline regression, and Bayesian kernel machine regression models. This study included 2,393 participants, with 46.9% experiencing periodontitis. Concentrations of nine urinary metals, including barium (Ba), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), cesium (Cs), molybdenum (Mo), lead (Pb), thallium (Tl), tungsten (Tu), and uranium (Ur), were measured using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. In addition, we analyzed the association between metals and periodontitis, stratified by age, body mass index, gender, and smoking status. Mediation models were also applied to investigate the mediated effects of biological aging between metal exposures and periodontitis. Results Weighted logistic and robust Poisson regression identified positive associations between Cd, Pb and periodontitis (P < 0.05). BKMR analyses indicated that mixed metal exposures were significantly associated with periodontitis, particularly among smokers, second-hand smokers, and males, with Cd, Pb, Tl, and Ba contributing the most. Furthermore, subgroup analyses observed a modifying effect on the associations between urinary Cd, Pb and periodontitis in stratified gender and BMI subgroups in robust Poisson regression. Phenotype age was found to mediate the association between metals and periodontitis. Conclusions This study identified significant positive associations between metal exposures and periodontitis in the U.S. adults. In addition, the association between metal exposures and periodontitis could vary in different gender, BMI and smoking subgroups. These associations were likely partly mediated by biological aging, suggesting that metals may potentially increase the risk of periodontitis by promoting cell senescence and overall aging of the body. OBJECTIVE. Analyze the causes and conditions for chronic generalized periodontitis, study means of preventive health care through individual oral hygiene. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The study analyzed the scientific literature, devoted to casual factors and conditions of developing chronic generalized periodontitis, its influence on the health of the body and as well as the role of oral hygiene in preventing its onset and progression. Articles in leading domestic dental peer-reviewed publications along with data sources from Pubmed over the past 5 years were analyzed. RESULTS. The literature analysis found that majority of authors acknowledge microbial biofilm microbiota of the oral cavity as the leading etiological factor of periodontitis; such factors as poor oral hygiene, endogenous and exogenous erythrocyte sorption overload, the impact of physical environmental factors – external electromagnetic fields and vibrations affect the progression of the disease. Meanwhile, measures of professional oral hygiene и normalization of individual oral hygiene allows to significantly reduce the risk of emerging and progressing chronic generalized periodontitis. DISCUSSION. By category visits patients, suffering from CGP, were distributed as follows: 61,6 ± 0,7 % people – retirees of Russian Defense Ministry, 16,5 ± 0,5 % people – family members of military men and retired of RDM, 16,3 ± 0,5 % – military men, attached to the dentistry clinic of RDM military units and institutions, 5,7 ± 0,3 % – RMD cadets. Means of individual oral hygiene, relevant for the prevention of periodontitis, include about 15 items. Part of them are classified as traditional, and the proper application of some of them requires additional training, including in the framework of special medical training during hygiene education work and health promotion. The authors came to a conclusion about the expediency of increasing the number of dentists to intensify the prevention of dental caries and periodontal diseases among military men through professionally monitored oral hygiene. CONCLUSION. The high prevalence and intensity of dental system diseases among military men shows the relevance of regular sanitation of their oral cavity. Systematic implementation of individual oral hygiene measures decreases the number of bacteria in the mouth, prevents the development of severe overall body response to inflammation, contributes to a significant reduction in the number of exacerbation of concomitant somatic diseases that improves overall health and people’s quality of life. Professionally monitored oral hygiene, oral hygiene education and motivation for applying modern hygiene products are considered as the basis of oral disease prevention.
